I have been freelance writing music reviews and doing interviews for the better part of seven years now. One of the first albums I ever reviewed was Company of Thieves‘s sophomore album, Running From A Gamble, and I absolutely loved that record. Though, I have to admit that review was never published and it would be a little while before I got my writing legs under me. Well, fast-forward almost seven years and 8 lineup changes for the Chicagoan indie-rock band, Company of Thieves, will release their third release, Better Together.
If you have never heard of Company of Thieves before, then buckle up, because this band incites some of the loyalest fans into a fever pitch. With their hiatus now over and the release of their new EP, original members, vocalist Genevieve Schatz and guitarist Marc Walloch, have joined up with percussionist/keyboardist Chris Faller on Better Together to create an updated, mature sound that is still gritty and distinctly their sound. While the EP for the Los Angeles-based trio includes only 3 new original tracks, it does entice us with two live songs including their first single from the Better Together ,”Treasure”, and a live version of their debut single, “Oscar Wilde” from the Ordinary Riches album.
Now a completely independent band, Company of Thieves are experimenting with their sound and style. While it is still alternative and rock in nature, their is more of a flamboyance that shines through in every aspect of their new songs. They are no longer bound by genre tags or a record labels’ thirst for money, but are now driven by their passion, emotion and their desire to bring music to their fans and it makes for great music.
Better Together is just the beginning too, the band has confirmed that they are working on a new full-length as well!
