Female-fronted alt-rock band, Black Satellite, launched their debut single, “Valkyrie” earlier this year in April to critical acclaim. Well, since then the New York-based duo of vocalist Larissa Vale and guitarist Kyle Hawken have been hard at work putting together their debut album, Endless. For more than a half decade, the pair have been writing songs together and their chemistry is undeniable. With Hawken‘s hard-hitting, driving guitar riffs and Vale‘s heavenly and haunting voice, Black Satellite is aggressive and energetic without being irritating and agitating. In addition to the heavy, angry instrumentation and ethereal vocals, the every track is deeply rooted by a thunderous, heart-pounding percussion that drives the album from beginning to end.
Endless is a far reaching soundscape that is not limited to just an overtly aggressive nature of rock, but encompasses a well-rounded style that is harnessed in numerous styles that can be attributed to their many influences. “Calamity” has a much more industrial feel that evokes a bit of White Zombie and Marilyn Manson. While “Still I Remember” is kind of a mashup of Shinedown, Halestorm and Muse. And even though Black Satellite is an amalgamation of their influences, they still are uniquely their own. The ability to balance their musical aggression and maintain a soul searching vocal tenderness that is amazing.
Vale stated about the upcoming album, “For us, Endless is very much a journey of conflict, self-acceptance, and desire. Finding a balance amidst the chaos.” And they have done a masterful job of finding that balance.
There is also something to be said about Black Satellites‘s ability to mashup some of their favorite artists’ sounds and mold it into new phrases that are their own. It is a gift and a talent. The State College, Pennsylvania natives are the verge of stardom and it is time to jump on this freight train.
The debut album, Endless, by Black Satellite will be available, July 7, 2017, but pre-order the album on their website: HERE. In the mean time, check out their current releases on Spotify below!
