It has been said that the Black Lips have “matured” since their early days. If you are familiar with the band, you know very well then that even a bit of a calmer approach to their live shows would still be considered bat shit crazy for the majority of us. Black Lips have been consistently releasing music for over 15 years now, including their brand new album, Satan’s Graffiti or God’s Art?
When listening to Satan’s Graffiti or God’s Art? it is almost as if someone has dipped Joe Strummer into the Lazarus Pit and he has returned to the music world with a crazed bloodlust and has every listener in his crosshairs. It is dirty. It is rotten. It is loud. It is repulsive. In other words, it is perfectly beautiful garage rock.
Satan’s Graffiti or God’s Art? does indeed show a maturation for Black Lips though. There are actual discernible melodies and the production is much cleaner this time around. Although that may sound like a band losing their edge on paper, I assure you that it is not. There is no turning these boys from the dirty south into anything less than the savages they are.
Their music may not be for everyone, but Satan’s Graffiti or God’s Art? certainly stays true to the glorious ugliness that makes the Black Lips.
