When Sabrina Teitelbaum, better known by her stage name BAUM, hit the stage at Seattle’s Lo-Fi in South Lake Union, we knew she had the potential to be a star. The Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter has finally released her debut EP, Ungodly, that features all of her released singles plus an additional track, “Dream Girl”. If you have ever listened to BAUM‘s music, you know that grunge pop style is infused with positive and introspective lyrics.
BAUM has set out to change the way the world looks at women and to inspire her two sisters to be better and more self-confident in a world that tries to objectify them. Her music is beautiful honest and unbelievably powerful. The subject matter ranges from being cat called (“This Body”) to her struggles with being queer (“Hot Water”).
“I wrote Ungodly about my life as a pretty normal young woman craving the things everyone craves — self-confidence and love,” BAUM said. “There are love songs on the EP, but as a whole it is really an introspective project — shining a light of empowerment on my own story. It’s about being young and doing crazy, reckless things to feel alive and to feel loved.”
And honestly, this makes us feel loved. This 5-song cracking pop EP is a revelation. It is something real, completely relatable and makes the 20-year old a musical sensation. It is hard to escape her catchy beats and stunningly beautiful vocals without feeling something. And if you do not feel anything, you are probably dead. Seriously.
Ungodly is one of the best debut EPs out there. It is a must-have and you should pick it up now.
