Almost exactly a year after releasing Painted With, Animal Collective has released a companion EP to the album titled, The Painters. The four-song collection features the very distinct neo-psychedelic sound of the Maryland-based band and, although experimental pop in general is an acquired taste, that is the point of being experimental, right?
I always find it weird to be reviewing this style of music. Although I love some of the weirder sounds of the 60s and 70s, I have never even experimented with something as simple and rightfully legal (had to get that in there) as marijuana. The majority of my friends who do experiment with psychedelics tell me that I am missing out on the true point of this style by being sober. I respectfully disagree. Although the beats can be a bit overwhelming at times and it may not be a typical go to while driving around on a Sunday, I find the overall sound to be both fascinating and in many ways a trip in itself.
The Painters is just that, a four-song trip. Regardless of your sobriety, be prepared to be entranced by the sounds of one of the best in the game. Animal Collective certainly deserves a high – way up high – five for this EP.
