There is always something fun about finding an artist that is pushing the boundaries of music. One of those said artists is Peter Barbee. His evolving musical project, known as Among Savages, is a brilliant mix of poetic, honest lyrics and bizarre orchestration that creates a diverse and emotional journey. Among Savages has this ability to take ubiquitous problems with growth, self-confidence and identity, and make it personal. And that is exactly happened on the new album, Accounts of Friend and Foe.
When a voice that is beautifully clear, and is as emotive as any, is matched with the clean, precise songwriting that Among Savages boosts on Accounts of Friend and Foe, then is a cause for celebration. Then when independent songwriting goes beyond the music and flows its way into the visual and literary, you get some fun, trippy music videos (like “If You See Her” video below).
What is interesting though is that each of the songs is different, but there is a wonderful cohesion that surrounds the entire album. Among Savages drives home the point that, this is a deeply emotional album filled with real struggles on songs like “Fear” and “Can’t Let Go”. And one of the highlight track is the latest single, “Getting Older Quicker”. It is filled with dark, brooding melodies and progressive themes that bring this track front and center.
So if you are looking for something a little different, but has all of the hallmarks of what makes music great, then pick up Accounts of Friend and Foe by Among Savages. It does not disappoint.
