Seattle native, Amanda Markley, has a voice that is so pure and emotive she draws the listener in with every lyric. Her latest release, a self-titled EP, showcases the magic and energy that surrounds this young woman. From the opening track, “Fire,” to the reimagining of a past favorite, “Cold,” the diversity shown on Amanda Markley EP is second to none. The unifying element is Markley’s powerful, heartfelt lyrics.
Markley nails the sentiments behind incredible heartbreak and exciting love. There isn’t a single listener who can’t relate to her songs. “Fire” is a track about dealing with heartbreak and staying strong through it. “I’ll take fire over loving you again,” is a hard hitting lyric that any heartbroken soul can relate to. Heartache comes in stages and once you realize that fire is more desirable than their love, you’re empowered and ready to move on. In contrast, Amanda Markley EP closes with a fragile, haunting version of “Cold.” The original version is on the EP, however, it’s the revisit of this track that truly is a gut-punch in the feels. Pure, somber vocals pull at the heartstrings as the piano perfectly accents every ounce of emotion behind this track. “How could I know you’d be so cold?” No one expects the person they love to go icy on them but it’s something everyone has experienced in one form or another.
From opening with fire and ending with ice, Amanda Markley is sure to make you feel things you didn’t know you could or maybe didn’t want to anymore. Music therapy to this extreme is so amazing and wonderful that it should be heard by every ear possible. Markley is an incredibly talented artist with much ahead of her.
