So, the email I received started off with, “…if life always gives you lemons, what do you make?” and normally I would probably pass on it, but since it was the first email of the day, I clicked it. And I am glad I did. Within the email contained a brand new single, “Butterfly Effect”, by Abbi Press. The Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter and producer is on the verge of taking a genre, electro-pop, that could be called mundane and insipid, to another level.
On “Butterfly Effect”, Abbi Press is taking the best of EDM, hip-hop and, bizarrely, jazz to a place where the fusion is unique, fun and vibrant. Her tender, ethereal vocals are laid down beautifully over a bevy of chilled out beats and lingering notes of the keyboard and harp. With the help of harpist Anna Bikales and drummer Robby Bowen, there is an intimate blend of the organic and electronic music.
And the motif of “Butterfly Effect” is one of finding a place in the world and comes fully in view as Abbi Press croons, “The greatest place on earth/Is where you feel safe/Is where you feel love”. In addition it can be seen as a self-improvement song. To change the world, one must change their self, “Just start tomorrow/Better myself today”.
Abbi Press‘s ability to craft a phrase into a well-produced single is wonderful and balanced. “Butterfly Effect” is just the beginning for the up and coming artist and this lemonade is tasting pretty good. Try a sip.
