When I was first introduced to Teddy Edwards, I could not have guessed his age. I would have bet that he was an old soul with the decades of life experiences, especially after listening to his single, “Always Be There”. Well, I would have been completely wrong because Teddy Edwards, singer/songwriter/producer from New York City, is just 17 years old. Yeah, you read that correctly. 17.
Thankfully, I was given the opportunity to chat with the up and coming artist about songwriting at a young age, balancing his social life and what is coming up in 2017. Enough jabbering from me. Here is Teddy Edwards.
Teddy Edwards: I’m a singer, songwriter & producer born and raised in NYC. I’ve been spending the last few months working in the studio and am looking forward to be sharing more songs off of my album soon.
LM: At the tender age of 18, you have already been playing music for 14 years and writing songs since 9. It kind of blows our mind. When you are that age, what kind of inspiration and experienced did you rely on when writing songs?
TE: Yeah, I’ve been doing music for a while! I think music has always been something I’m really passionate about, and is my outlet of expression. My inspiration comes from what’s around me, what makes up my reality. Good songwriting is honest, and I think that my music shows that. I have stories that I want to share, and messages that I want to be heard. They will all start to shine through, as I keep releasing more music.
LM: Your latest track, “Always Be There”, is a smooth and maturity electro-pop track. Songwriting is such a personal thing. So what kind of things challenged you when writing a track like “Always Be There”?
TE: I wrote “Always Be There” about this girl I knew who was going through a lot at the time. Things seemed to be falling apart for her and resulting had a lot of trust issues. “Always Be There” was a way for me to tell her that I was there for her and to remind her there’s always someone there when you need them. I think that everyone needs to be reminded of that sometimes.
LM: I remember when I was 18 (which was a LONG time ago) and I could barely keep mine balanced. How do you balance school, writing music, producing and friends?
TE: It’s not always easy because I devote a lot of my time to my music, but I’m lucky to have some really supportive and loyal friends who are understanding and make sure that we still find time to hang out.
LM: Now that your single is out, what else is in store for you in 2017?
TE: I’ll be releasing some more singles off of the album and will hopefully be putting the album out in the fall.
LM: Thank you so much!
