Los Angeles’ Sure Sure are starting to make waves in the world of indie pop and thankfully for those of us here on the West Coast, they – along with Wilderado – are visiting a city near you starting tomorrow with Seattle. We were fortunate enough to steal a bit of time from their drummer Kevin Farzad to chat with us here about the tour, their music, and brownies! Check out our Q&A with them below, as well as their upcoming tour dates, so you can catch them live!
Tell us a little bit about yourselves. How did you all meet?
At that time we were turtles living in New York City. To save on rent, we took up residence in the sewers, where a man named Hamato Yoshi took us under his wing. One day we accidentally fell into some glowing mutagenic goo, whereupon we transformed into our current form: Sure Sure. Then, Hamato Yoshi AKA Master Splinter, a genius multi-instrumentalist who specializes in drums, bass, guitar, and synths, put us through a rigorous musical training program. He also trained us in ninjutsu. We also love pizza.
That sounds…familiar. You just released your debut self-titled album this year, what was the process like for you guys?
It was really fun. We record ourselves in our house all day and when we got stuck on a certain song, we would go to the park and throw a Frisbee. I can’t emphasize enough how important throwing a Frisbee is to the musical process. After the park, we would make a healthy dinner and work on some more songs.
The reception toward the album has been so great so far as well, so congratulations! What was it like when you first heard yourselves on the radio?
I remember driving to target one day and turning on KCRW and hearing “Friends”. What a wild feeling it is to hear your band’s song coming through your car speakers while you’re driving to buy socks.
You’re currently touring with Wilderado (one of our favorites here) around the U.S. We’re pretty excited since you’re stopping in Seattle on November 6th to play Chop Suey. Any sightseeing planned before the show?
Wilderado are the best. We’ve loved touring with them and are bummed we don’t get to spend more time together on the road. As far as sightseeing goes, we can’t wait to stay at Michele and Jim’s house. They’re Charlie’s mom’s friends and we always stay with them in Seattle. Michele is the best cook. Last time she made us brownies from scratch for after our show. Too good. Michele’s brownies from scratch count as sightseeing, right?
After this tour wraps up, you’re headed back out on the road to kick of 2019 with Young The Giant. How do you guys keep sane covering all those miles?
We try to eat healthily and exercise. It’s funny – people always ask us if we party a lot on the road and the answer is not really. We gotta put on a show every night – it’s physically taxing. We’re like athletes. Do professional basketball players party every night? Maybe. I would if I could dunk a basketball like that.
It’s hard to believe, but we’re nearing the end of 2018, we always do our list of favorites in December here, what music would you guys put at the top of your lists this year?
Love the singles that Still Woozy has put out this year. Also, we super dig Capacity by Big Thief (even tho technically that’s 2017).
Don’t forget to pick up the boys’ self-titled album, Sure Sure on iTunes now. And check out Sure Sure on tour with Wilderado at one of these remaining stops below and by purchasing tickets: HERE.
