The United Kingdom has been putting out some great music over the decades. We have had a bevy of new artists that we have featured from across the pond including our next guest: The Ramona Flowers. The boys from Bristol are about to embark on a tour that includes the Fuji Rocks Festival in Japan later this month. Thankfully, Sam had a few minutes to spare to chat with us about their latest single, “If You Remember”, their upcoming EP, Magnify, and what gets their creativity going! So I would like to introduce to you, The Ramona Flowers!
Lemonade Magazine: Thanks guys for chatting with us! So, the band is named after the female heroine from the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels and movie. Tell us how that came about and how you guys met up as a band.
The Ramona Flowers: Trying to find a band name is always hard, we had quite a few ideas, some good some not so good! Then Sam just happened to watch the film Scott Pilgrim and came to us straight away with the name; The Ramona Flowers. He explained the character and it just seemed to fit with the image and sound we wanted to create. We all agreed instantly which never happens!
Dave [Betts], Wayne [Jones] and I were in previous bands together in Bristol and decided to place an ad for a singer, which Steve [Bird] applied for. We only auditioned him and took him on the spot. He definitely made an impression (and still does!). Dave knew of Ed [Gallmore] who was a well-known local drummer on the Bristol scene and the rest, they say, is history.
LM: You guys are from Bristol, England. What is the music scene like over there right now?
TRF: Bristol has always had a strong music scene, the obvious ones being Massive Attack and Portishead, but we also have a really cool underground scene. Bristol is known for its laid back trip-hop vibe but hopefully we can show that there’s more to the ‘Bristol Sound’.
LM: Your sound is different and exciting! We got a preview of your music with release of “If You Remember”, which is outstanding. Can we expect more of the same style on the upcoming EP, Magnify?
TRF: You definitely can expect more, but I think we’ve got stronger songs still to come. It feels like there’s a lot more depth to this album, particularly lyrically. Steve’s absolutely on form at the moment and we’re all really excited with the way things are turning out. I think this will be our strongest album by far!
TRF: Haha! I think that might have been taken too literally!
LM: Haha! Maybe so.
TRF: We get inspired by certain sounds, and they can evoke a feeling that might inspire you at the time of writing. With “If You Remember”, we got inspired by these operatic voices we found on some software that inspired the hook. But we take inspiration from all genres of music, and prefer not to limit ourselves. If it’s beautiful and clever with emotion and thought, then we’re inspired. We take inspiration from life too, which throws enough at you!
LM: So besides the classical music, what other bands or artists inspired the upcoming EP?
TRF: We get inspired by bands like M83, Phoenix, Everything Everything, Radiohead, St. Lucia, but then we can also get inspired by the production with some really good pop. Artists like Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, Sia, whilst controversial to say for a band like us, we can totally recognize the work put into some of those big hits, and some of them sound incredible! They can influence us too, we’re not afraid to come into the studio and crank up a banging pop hit!
LM: That is pretty amazing. I think taking influences from all styles makes for a better and more rounded sound. After Magnify releases, what are your plans for supporting the new EP? Any chance of a US/North American trip?
TRF: Totally! We are planning to come back to the US as soon as possible. After the EP, we’ll be diving straight into the campaign for our next album, so we’re aiming to hit as much of the world as we can. We head off to Japan this week to play Fuji Rocks Festival, which we’re all really excited about!
LM: Thanks again for taking the time to chat with us! We really appreciate it!
