Earlier this year, we had a chance to check out the multi-talented artist Lui Hill‘s brand new music video for his single, “5000 Miles” (HERE). It is fantastic. We knew we had to sit down with the up and coming singer/songwriter and chat about his debut music video and more. Thankfully, Hill had a few minutes to hang out and chat about the track and why the City of Angels was the perfect backdrop for his music video.
We are so proud to present to you Lui Hill!
Lemonade Magazine: Hey Lui! Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us!
Lui Hill: Hey, thanks a lot for having me! And thanks for previously covering my single release ‚ “5000 Miles” , by the way.
LM: Of course! You are very welcome. It is a killer track. So could you tell us a little bit about your musical history?
LH: I have a long running history with music. A lot of ups and downs, but it’s always been love and I’ve held on. I’m self-produced and I think I’ve found my voice for now. The release of “5000 Miles” also represents a fresh start to a new journey that I’m really excited about.
LM: Your debut single, “5000 Miles”, is brilliant. What inspired the sound and content of the track?
LH: I wrote this track during a transition phase in my life- one where I was coming out of a really dark place and just finally starting to see and feel that things would actually get better again. They always do, but some how we forget that when we’re in the midst of it. Anyways, I wrote it while on tour in South Africa which was an amazing experience for me. It was an honor to not just be a tourist, but be there performing and giving something back to these incredibly warm-hearted people. This exchange helped me escape a cycle of depression and self-doubt. I found so much relief there that I was just trying to absorb all of the impressions I could of this place- I took in everything that came to my eyes and ears- and wrote it basically stenographically, sampling birds, people on the streets, etc. to manifest this surrounding I found myself in. It was the only way I could express this positive shift happening inside of me. I guess the track is really about healing.
LM: In addition to releasing “5000 Miles” a corresponding music video was released that is dark and brooding. Could you tell us why you chose Los Angeles as the backdrop?
LH: Well, of course there’s a certain aesthetic I liked in LA, especially those dark corners and allies which contrast the palm-tree sunshine idea many have of it. Also because it’s a place where so many people project their hopes and aspirations onto. It’s a place where your dreams can blossom, but just as quickly can be destroyed. I felt a connection in this respect to LA and I think it likewise just fits the music.
LM: Now that your debut is out, should we expect more new music in 2018?
LH: Yea! I have a handful of singles rolling out and then finally my album roughly in September.
LM: Well, we cannot wait and here is hoping that we see you on tour in 2018! Thanks again for your time, Lui!
LH: Yeah! Thanks, Lemonade!
