Lea Cappelli has been on our radar for close to a year and we have been trying to get an interview with the dark pop synth singer-songwriter for about as long. Thankfully, we got the opportunity and did not let it pass us by! The New York-based artist, and artist in the complete sense of the word, is getting ready to release her upcoming EP, Fever Dream, and she took a few minutes to chat with us!
We are so proud to introduce you to Lea Cappelli!
Lemonade Magazine: We appreciate you taking the time to chat with us, Lea! Most of our readers are just being introduced to you, so could you tell us a bit about yourself?
Lea Cappelli: Thank you! I’m originally from Arizona, now living in Brooklyn, New York. I’ve been singing since I can remember, but in recent years have started to get more into production. I am inspired by a huge variety of artists, everyone from Nick Cave to Lauryn Hill, Portishead, D’Angelo, and beyond.
LM: Your most recent single, “Such A Lovely Thing” is brilliant. What inspired the track?
LC: Thank you! The inspiration for the track was from my developmental years, when I was really unhappy and unsure about my sexuality, body, and place as a woman. These things are still developing and unfolding of course, but through my move to New York and interactions with different, unique people I started to really come into my own and appreciate my power.
LM: The video walks the line of blending high fashion and a music video. How did the concept come about and what types of challenges and successes came up when collaborating with your mother (Kelly Cappelli)?
LC: My mom and I have been really close collaborators for years, to the point where it seems we can now read each other creatively. It was a very quick succession when we came up with the idea; she would come up with a bit, I would come up with a bit, and then our ideas would grow from each other. It was really a beautiful thing to experience.
LM: We had the chance to preview the upcoming EP, Fever Dream, and it is a dark, moody symphonic wonderland. We have an obsession with the song, “Disease.” What is your favorite track on the EP and why?
LC: Thank you! “Disease” came from a pretty dark place in my life so I was happy to release such a pointed and personal track. My favorite track on the EP is “Fever Dream”, which I think encompasses a darkly soulful sound that the producer Dominic Fallacaro helped create.
LM: There is such perfection in the layers of the production for each of the tracks on Fever Dream. How does this complicate how you will design a live set?
LC: My live set has shifted and morphed since the beginning of the EP. I fell in love with Ableton Live and started performing solo sets with it; with the help of my incredible mentor Julie Kathryn (@i_am_snowangel). The set is still changing to this day, but I love having the hands-on feeling of Ableton, where you can manipulate the track in real time.
LM: Speaking live sets, are you planning a tour to support the EP?
LC: We do have some exciting things in the works, especially when Spring rolls around. Stay tuned with @leacappelli!
LM: Thank you again for taking the time! We cannot wait to share your music with the world.
LC: Thank you, Lemonade! You’re the best.
