Here at Lemonade we like to bring you some new flavor from around the world. Just recently we were introduced to South Africa’s, The Soap Girls, a punk rock duo who’s personalities are only equaled in size by their music.
We had a quick chat with both of them recently to help you get to know them, so with all that said…I introduce to you, The Soap Girls….
So to start, tell us a little about the two of you. I know you call Cape Town home now, but you’re originally from France right?
We were born Paris, France and grew up up in Cape Town South Africa. We are currently in the process of relocating as we want to be better positioned within the music scene. Although we are total opposites the two of us are extremely close and could not imagine life without the other. We are both strong believers in non judgmentalism and freedom and standing up for the most vulnerable in society, the elderly, the disabled and animals.
What is the music scene like in Cape Town?
South Africa represents 1% of the music market worldwide so the music scene is tiny and very conservative.
I have some ties to both France and South Africa. My family and friends in France will sometimes listen to some punk music, but much of what I’ve heard out of South Africa is different. What led the two of you to that sound?
Life we guess. it was never a conscious decision, we are outcasts.
Obviously your music is full of personality, but what are you guys like away from music? What other things do you enjoy?
We are very much into nature and a natural way of life. We also love volunteer work and learning new languages. People are often surprised at how approachable we are.
From what I can tell, your live shows are insane to say the least. What is the craziest thing that either or both of you have done on stage?
You gotta be insane to create,so we are completely mad onstage, I (Mille) exceed my madness at every show, but one of craziest things I’ve done is make out with an 80 odd year old grandpa, my sister was shocked as was the audience!
Any plans on touring North America?
We definitely do! We are hoping for next year.
What’s on the schedule for the rest of 2016?
We embark on our EU tour from next month, hitting Holland first then Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Italy.
Then we will head back to the UK for some more shows. We are also about to release our second single here in the UK “Rather Be Dead” with a Music video.
