Back in early 2016 when I came across SOFI TUKKER‘s Soft Animals EP on Apple Music, I was pleasantly surprised by their very charming form of dance music. The sound itself was very global in feeling and they were very unique to anyone else in the genre.
Since then, things have only gotten better for the New York-based duo including a Grammy nomination and a spot at a little festival called Coachella. I, for one, couldn’t be happier for their success and was very fortunate to get a chance to ask them some questions. Not familiar with these soon to be superstars? Now is your chance.
Brandon: Since you’re new to Lemonade, tell us a little bit about yourselves.
Sophie: We are Sophie and Tucker. Sophie is really into tea and Tucker doesn’t know how to consume hot liquids. Sophie also likes yoga and Tucker likes basketball. Tucker is really tall. Sophie is kinda tall.
B: A few of your songs off of Soft Animals are sung in Portuguese, as they are both inspired by Brazilian poet, Chacal. Did you (Sophie) grow up speaking the language? It is very unique and refreshing to hear it.
S: I learned the language when I was in college and then spent 6 months in Rio! I love it and I find that Brazilian Portuguese lends itself perfectly to being sung–it’s such a melodic language.
B: The past few months have come with some incredible news for you guys. Let’s start with the fact your song “Drinkee” is nominated for a Grammy for Best Dance Recording! Congratulations! What was your reaction like when you were made aware of this?
S: We were totally shocked and elated–still are! We had no idea that the Grammy nominations were being announced and we definitely never expected to be nominated!
B: We also found out recently that you will be playing Coachella, so you will effectively be kicking off the 2017 festival season. How exciting is this for you both?
S: We love performing so much! We are grateful for the opportunity to perform anywhere, but to be able to do so among some of our favorite artists at such an iconic festival is really exciting!! We can’t wait!
B: Who’s set(s) are you hoping to catch while you’re there?
S: We can’t wait to see The xx, Lorde, Crystal Castles, Maya Jane Coles, Justice … to name just a few!
B: As I mentioned earlier, you are up for a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. The dance genre has become pretty prominent as of late. You guys are quite a bit different than the other artists we hear, especially with your use of many different instruments. Where do you see the genre heading in the next several years?
S: I think the genre is going to have a little identity crisis in a good way in the next few years. We don’t know exactly where it’s going but we also don’t feel like we have to stay in one genre anyway. We don’t really even know where our music will head the next several years! For the new music we do know about, some of it straddles a bunch of different genres. We continue to be surprised by what comes out of us and are inspired by increasingly bizarre things! It’s cool that dance has become infused and entangled in live instruments. Combining the electronic dance vibe with raw, imperfect elements is definitely one of our favorite things!
B: We are huge fans of Soft Animals here at Lemonade (We gave it a five stars). The EP has a very exotic feeling throughout. Tell us a little bit about the process of making it.
S: Thank you! We made it over the course of about 8 months as we were trying to figure out who we were as a band. We figured out how to collaborate with each other throughout the process of making those 6 songs and have since really honed in on how we work together–which is super collaborative–we often don’t know who made what part of the song!
B: Your voice works so perfectly with Betta Lemme on your track, “Awoo”. The song was also kind of our introduction to Betta as well, how did you all end up working together?
S: Betta is a good friend of ours in New York. We were hanging out one day at the piano and the song emerged. We didn’t really intend to make a song but it was hot so we just ran with it! She has some great tracks in her pocket whenever she decides to come out with them! We’re excited for her.
B: You guys also appear to be embarking on what looks like a mostly east coast tour this spring. Where are some of your favorite stops on tour?
S: We love everywhere! Boston and Atlanta are two of our hometowns so we are really excited about those! And New York, of course…but honestly, we have had such amazing experiences in most of those cities and have dear friends all over. We are also really excited to go places we’ve never been to before like New Orleans!
B: Is there a west coast tour in the works post-Coachella?
S: We will announce some more dates soon!
B: Now that we got a taste of SOFI TUKKER in 2016 with the Soft Animals EP, what is on the schedule for 2017?
S: Lots more music! We will be playing a lot of it live and will release them throughout the year. We are so excited to share!
