Hey Kina! Thanks so much for answering these questions for us, we are so happy to be featuring you in Lemonade again, I can’t believe it’s been almost three years since you were on the cover! How has life been since then?
Life has been great, thanks!
Tell us a little about Elements, we are big fans of the album here at Lemonade. What was different about making this album compared to Stairwells?
Well thank you! A lot of life has happened since the last album, and because of that I’ve grown and learned a lot about myself and what’s important to me. I think because of that my songwriting has matured a bit. I forced myself to confront topics I would have shied away from in the past. Musically, I’ve learned so much since the last album as well and wanted to make a point to do a lot more experimenting sonically this time around.
I remember the last time we talked we discussed your shyness. A little while after that I saw you play live at Bumbershoot in Seattle, either you hide it really well or the shyness is going away, because you put on a phenomenal set. How are you feeling on stage these days?
Strangely it can still vary from show to show. The audience, on any given night, kind of determines my level of comfort (or awkwardness) on stage. I’ve definitely come a ways from when I started playing shows 10 years ago–nearly all of those ended in me hiding somewhere afterwards and crying…*laughs*. It was a big step for me. Nowadays I see the audience more as friends and less as people who are there to judge me.
Speaking of being on stage, you have an eight stop tour coming up in May and it’s all sold out already! Congratulations! Any plans of heading back to Seattle later in the summer?
Thanks, I will definitely be back to Seattle! It’s looking like the full US tour will be this fall.
Since you are the Queen of Covers (many of them better than the originals), I have to ask….are there any new ones in the works this year?
I’m really trying to come up with something great for the fall tour, but so far I’m stumped! On tour I really like to play an unexpected cover and really try to flip it. In the past I’ve had a ton of fun with “Gangstas Paradise” and “Oops I Did it Again,” so I’m hoping another song like that comes to mind.
Not only are you the Queen of Covers, you also probably deserve the title of “Queen of Music Videos” after your epic jellybean filled video for “In Your Arms” which came shortly after the last time we spoke. Do you have anything exciting planned for any of the songs off of Elements?
No 22 month-long videos this time around, I’m afraid, but I’m definitely focused on creating some great visual art for my songs. I’d love to make an official music video for every song on the album.
