It’s hard to believe that it’s been over three years since “Wake Me Up” by Aloe Blacc was tearing up the airwaves. The song was synonymous with Avicii at the time, but the voice behind it was Southern California’s Aloe Blacc. A hip-hop/R&B veteran who finally got his break in the states (oddly enough, his song “I Need A Dollar” had hit #1 in the UK in 2010, but most of us stateside had never heard the song).
We haven’t heard much from Aloe Blacc since his major label debut, Lift Your Spirit, but just in time for the holidays, Aloe Blacc has released a four song EP featuring holiday classics to enjoy. The covers include “The Christmas Song,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” “Let It Snow,” and “Santa Clause Is Coming to Town.” Each version is stripped down, featuring only Blacc‘s voice and an acoustic guitar, and although there is nothing revolutionary about the content, the result is very refreshing.
The release comes about a week after Aloe Blacc posted the video “Merry Christmas Mr. Brown” on his YouTube channel. The video features pictures of Mike Brown, Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Sandra Bland, and Oscar Grant with their families, as well as the empty streets and memorials in Paris. I am not sure why the song didn’t make the cut, whether it was recorded too late or if there was fear of controversy, but one thing I do know is that it is heartbreaking. It’s easy to pick a side and turn down the volume, but take politics out of these stories and what you are left with are families dealing with loss. People hurting, just like we all have at some point or another. I’d like to think we all have it in us to recognize that much.
