We are very excited here at Lemonade to be premiering the debut album from Mekong Xpress, Common Knowledge! After years of playing together, the Virginia natives have released their first full-length offering, a sound that includes hints of blues, funk, and even southern gospel.
The band had this to say regarding their background and release:
“We were thrown into a Monday night residency having never played together before. The band is a result of years of simple exploration of composition, and patience. Inspiration seems to come when we play together or hang, listening to the Beatles, Faces, sly stone, Bowie, Funkadelic, Little Feat, Tower of Power as well as a ton of RVA music,” Mekong Xpress stated.
“We’ve discovered friendship and music together, and hopefully created something that everyone will enjoy,” the Virginia quartet announced. “The album was made, schedules permitting, in a handful of sessions over a period of four years. We bought in some friends and family to help and made some nice memories. We also found that we write well together and enjoy the process as well as the results. The title track was the last song to be written and recorded and is a love letter to a friend. These songs are all very personal. Some pieces were written in advances, others in the studio to try and capture a spontaneous energy and give the music a fresh, alive feeling. We hope this music will find a home in people’s hearts and minds and help them get through the day.”
