Fellow Lemonade Owner/Writer Aaron Mannari woke me up this morning with Facebook messages containing a new band that I had to listen to. According to him, as soon as he heard them, he knew they were right up my alley. It turns out that I guess we’ve figured each other out pretty well over the past five years as he couldn’t be more right.
Against The Current hails from Poughkeepsie, NY and gained some popularity as many bands do these days doing covers on YouTube. Now we try really hard to be ahead of the curve here at Lemonade Magazine, but somehow these guys slipped through the cracks a bit. As it turns out they not only released their debut LP in May of this year, but they had two EP’s out before that. I guess even we’re not perfect right?
Much of the day Aaron and I spent time discussing who exactly they remind us of, but despite the obvious Paramore comparison that always seems to attach itself to alternative bands with a female lead singer, all we really could come up with was the fact that they really are their own band. I mean sure, lead singer Chrissy Costanza’s subtle growl that shows up every once in a while could be compared to Juliet Simms and the fact she’s a little singer with a big voice may remind some of Cassadee Pope or Sierra Kusterbeck, but when it all comes down to it, Against The Current is something new and fresh.
Their latest music video for their song “Wasteland” features Costanza and her bandmates, Dan Gow and Will Ferri in a fantasy world with darkening skies and a forest set on fire. I’ve included it below so that you can get on board with us. I also highly suggest you watch their other music videos on YouTube, as well as check out their debut LP In Our Bones. It honestly is such a great variety of stellar music. This certainly won’t be the last time you hear us talk about Against The Current here at Lemonade.
