You might remember the sassy young artist, Charlotte Sometimes, that we featured about a year ago. Well, she’s back with a more sultry, mature persona now known as LACES and we got a chance to chat with her about her upcoming self-titled debut EP and what we can expect from her in the future!
Lemonade Magazine: Hey! Thank you so much for taking time out of you busy schedule to chat with us! It’s definitely a pleasure!
LACES: Of course! Thanks for having me!
Lemonade Magazine: We’re happy to have you! First off, I want to say congratulations on the upcoming EP! Tell us a little bit about what we can expect from LACES compared to Charlotte Sometimes.
LACES: Thank you so much! I am super stoked! LACES is a little more raw, adult, electronic and sexual than Charlotte Sometimes. Though Charlotte was still a little vixen ha. But really I think the biggest difference is my ability to connect with myself in a more authentic way. LACES is more aligned with the music I listen to and the way I live my life.
Lemonade Magazine: We love that little vixen but are also really excited for the sultry, sexy side to come out. Your new single, “Erotic,” has everything we loved about Charlotte Sometimes but with a more mature sound – how much has changed for you from those days, to being on The Voice, to now?
LACES: I appreciate that! Well, when I started as Charlotte I was about 18/19 years old. I am now a 27 year old woman. I think maturity naturally came. The point of view is a little different. It’s a little more that I am totally 100 percent okay with being a fierce ass woman than when I was Charlotte, it just wasn’t landing yet for me. Insecurity and anxiety were running the show.
Lemonade Magazine: It’s very apparent on the EP that you’re starting to take control. What is your favorite thing about your upcoming EP?
LACES: That it feels honest and that I might listen to it even if I didn’t write it. Gosh that made me sound like a big a**hole. But I mean I am proud of what I did.
Lemonade Magazine: Ha! There’s nothing a**hole with being proud of your work! The entire EP is pretty fantastic, you should be proud – what new influences have you picked up over time?
LACES: I think I just am a product of what’s going on musically right now. I can hear a song once on the radio and dig it and kind of take it on a little bit the next time I write. Right now I’ve been digging Sky Ferreira, Mikky Ekko, Ryn Weaver, Lykke Li and my typical 90s music that I refuse to stop listening to.
Lemonade Magazine: Can’t go wrong with 90s music! What can we expect to see from LACES in the near future? Any plans for a full-length album or upcoming tours?
LACES: Well, I have a video that I co-produced, styled, edited and shot that’s coming out. I did it with my friend Jeff at my apartment. It was such a fun experiment and I can’t wait to share it. I do think I will be making another record this summer, or at least I am in talks about that. No tour plans right now, but I do have a show June 24th @ The Silverlake Lounge in Los Angeles.
Lemonade Magazine: We’re excited to see it! If your EP is any indication of your upcoming full length album, we can’t wait to hear it. Like you said, you’ve been doing this for about 9 years no so I’d say you’ve got a bit of experience under your belt – what advice would you give to aspiring singer/songwriters?
LACES: If you think you want to do something else… you should. If this is all you want, remember not to lose the reason why you’re doing it. We are all human beings first. We turn to art to support that, not to lose ourselves completely.
Lemonade Magazine: That is excellent advice and I think a welcome reminder to anyone who is in the arts or otherwise. One last question before we let you go, since we are Lemonade Magazine, we have to ask – What is your favorite type of lemonade?
LACES: I like my lemonade with alcohol.
Lemonade Magazine: I can’t say I blame you on that one. Thank you, again, for sitting down with us!
You can check out LACES’ latest single from the EP, “Erotic,” below and if you’re in the LA area, be sure to check her out at The Silverlake Loung on June 24th! You can get a copy of the EP June 9, 2015.
