LACES, the new project of Jessie Poland, evolves from the bubble-gum pop sensation, Charlotte Sometimes, into a heavy, dark beat-driven, synth-pop icon that unleashes her pent up rage in each track of her self-titled EP. Vocally, Poland still harbors that brilliant, raspy uniqueness that sets her apart from the rest of the pop wannabes and uses it to stunning effect to drive home her angst-y, tormented emotions.
LACES EP is untethered and free. It is about a musician that is finally in control artistically. That freedom is bursting throughout every track including one of her lead singles, “Liv It Up.” This song sums up the whole experience of Poland‘s desire to be free from what everyone else wants her to do. It is fast-paced anthem that questions why we allow ourselves to be controlled by unnecessary arguments and technology. LACES is trying not to give into the pressure of society and has found her motto, “We only wanna live it up every day…”
It is dark. It is brooding. It is catchy. It is stunning. It is difficult to run out of adjectives to describe this 5-song EP, but however it is described , it is a must listen. This is truly a talented artist who finally is allowing herself to be completely unrestrained and that is what music is all about. Poland’s decision to retire Charlotte Sometimes is her renaissance and the results are unbelievable. The LACES EP is proof.
